The projector as instrument by Floris Vanhoof

FlorisVanHoof

An immediate form of image and sound creation, playing with the possibilities of film projectors, taking advantage of the mechanics of machines in film performances, discovering what you can do when you have several film projectors running together.
Multi-projector performances allow artist-filmmakers the possibilities to expand their world of light-pictorial techniques. With customised 16mm projectors, the conventional tools become personal instruments used to transform loops of pure black-and-white frames into an immersive perceptual phenomenon.
Stroboscopic, abstract forms pulsing on the screen, slowly transform as additional, overlapping projectors create strange halos, odd 3D expansion and contraction. As more projectors are added,… Continue reading The projector as instrument by Floris Vanhoof

Masterclass – Using and reusing Crass Animation Equipment

6_animation stand

This hands-on master class will focus on the Crass animation-stand at LaborBerlin. It will deal with the traditional usage and maintenance of the equipment, as well as with analog to digital and digital to analog transfer techniques.
Crass was a West-Berlin based company for animation equipment. Until the early 1990s they developed relatively light, precise, and robust cameras and projectors for optical printing and animation stands. They were something like the low budget version of the Nielson-Hordell, Mitchell or Oxberry.
The animation-stand was mainly used for traditional drawn-animation, silhouette-films, laid animation and film titles. It can run forwards and backwards, usually has three exposure-speeds (1/2,… Continue reading Masterclass – Using and reusing Crass Animation Equipment

Symposium: Handmade Emulsion Primitive Colour

Konrad & Kurfust - Esther Urlus

In this symposium we will discuss and show the state-of-the-art on handmade emulsion and primitive colour and the current situation of motion picture film as a tool for artist-filmmakers. Experts on early colour systems and processes will refer to what filmmakers could learn, and take benefit of, from the pioneers in this field.
Its focus centres on the scientific and artistic research of the forgotten, abandoned and unexplored areas of the photochemical processes used in early colour films. By researching into early cinema publications and documents, contemporary filmmakers are able to discover a wide range of processes that have been abandoned in their primitive stages of development,… Continue reading Symposium: Handmade Emulsion Primitive Colour

Seminar: Handmade Emulsion Primitive Colour

Maddox Seminar L'Abominable 2014

A number of filmmakers worldwide have the distinction of making their own emulsion to create their films. The Seminar Handmade Emulsion Primitive Colour will consist of a week of research during which participants will exchange knowledge, conduct practical experiments and test new formulas in order to take significant steps in this research.
Although not a replacement for commercially produced film stocks, hand crafting and coating silver gelatine emulsions can lead to new and creative ways of forming cinematic images. The process of handmade film emulsion is one that offers the filmmaker an unprecedented degree of creative intervention and expressiveness that simply cannot be accomplished with commercial film stocks.… Continue reading Seminar: Handmade Emulsion Primitive Colour

Pilot Residency – Crass Animation Stand

AKIM_TEMPLES1

LaborBerlin is proud to announce Andrew Kim as our first Artist-in-residence. Within the RE-Mi project, LaborBerlin has initiated activities to develop the use of its Crass animation stand by collecting and sharing the available knowledge around its many uses and capabilities. These activities include a technical Masterclass taught by Lutz Garmsen, an expert on the machine, and internal workshops by the attendees to spread the knowledge gained in the class.  With the residency we will have one visiting artist take advantage of this newfound knowledge and further explore the machine’s artistic possibilities by creating a new film.
As a compliment to his production work Andrew will also lead a workshop and present two screenings which will feature his own films and a selection of films made by fellow Los Angeles based filmmakers:

His practice involves observational and documentary filmmaking especially in the field of structural film, as well as an approach to found footage which is strongly oriented on filmic language itself.
Born in 1982 in Vienna Johann Lurf has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Slade School of Art in London. He graduated from Harun Farocki’s film class in 2009, has received the State Grant of Austria for Video and Media Art and participated in the Artist-in-Residence Programs at the MAK Center for Arts and Architecture in Los Angeles 2011,… Continue reading Screening | Johann Lurf

Pilot residency – Els Van Riel

els-par-doris-kuwert-950x713

We are very pleased to be host to the illustrious Belgian artist filmmaker Els Van Riel for the final phase of the Re-engineering the Industry, Debrie Contact Printer programme: Pilot Residency.
Els Van Riel’s work deals with the poetic phenomena of the physical and questions the essential elements such as matter, motion, light, time, perception and relativity.
Her artistic approach has an innate experimental dimension and a strong scientific inspiration.
In a very pragmatic way, the act of questioning becomes methodology, which encompasses the mechanical apparatus of cinema, as a way of examining a hypothesis, (but neither validating or invalidating it) opening up a metaphysical horizon to the viewer.… Continue reading Pilot residency – Els Van Riel

In spite of claims of its obsolescence, analog film is still alive. It continues to exist as an inimitable artistic medium, put to use in myriad forms around the world. Nonetheless, in the context of our ever-expanding digital landscape, analog film faces new challenges that have forced it into a process of deep transformation. What steps do we need to take to guarantee that analog film will remain as a living-breathing medium?
